This project plays off the human-like anatomy of common desk lamps (e.g. Pixar logo, IKEA Tertial). We see these lamps as having feet, a two-segment spine (typically hunched over), a rotating neck, and a head which shines light upon whatever it is "gazing" at. But the prototype adds a few extra contortions to this figure (which the user manipulates during regular use), rendering its anatomy broken and imparting a sense of the inhumane.
This project is part of a greater investigation into the notion of "corporeal simulacra"—the idea that we often personify and impart the form and role of the human body as a part of the world of images which surrounds us. Perhaps the ability to perceive the uncanny valley in non-human entities means that we can relate to those entities in human terms.
